Salzburg and Maria von Trapp

I went to Austria a few years ago and snapped this photo in a cemetery. This is where a scene from the great “The Sound of Music” was filmed. Remember when, toward the end of the movie, the von Trapps sneak away from the music festival and the nuns hide them in the convent? Then Rolf, the Nazi punk, finds them and blows his whistle to alert his comrades. Well, this is the spot where they hid.

The cemetery is not really on top of a convent, and it’s not secluded, and it’s right in the middle of the city so it wouldn’t be quiet. I guess that’s part of the wonder of motion pictures. We suspend our disbelief so completely—but so safely—when watching a good movie.

Aw, it’s not secluded? Another illusion shattered. It’s an awesome photo, though.
