“Motto” (1951)

I play it cool
And dig all jive
That’s the reason
I stay alive.

My motto,
As I live and learn,
       is:
Dig And Be Dug
In Return.

    To be honest, I was never a big fan of Hughes -especially in comparison to Cullen. But over years when I read him alongside William Carlos Williams, ee cummings, and other Modernists, I appreciate him much more.

    And, I really love those last two lines.
